Okay, so I need to find a way then, to tie in the reveal that Eames tried an inception once and Arthur didn't know about it, WITH the revenge tale.

Maybe the inception he tried (and failed) had to do with theft. Or maybe he stole something important along the way?

Or maybe, as gelbwax suggests, it goes way back to the military and maybe Eames stole dreamshare? Or... I don't really know!

I know what you mean about it being upsetting, with doubting each other. Yet, that's what everyone is suggesting, so let's go with that! ^_^
